2007 – European Year of Equal opportunities for all

In France the High Authority for Combating Discriminations and for Equality will be in charge of implementing the European Year of Equal opportunities for all in 2007.
The European Year of Equal Opportunities for All in 2007 has three key aims:

1. making European Union citizens aware of their right to non-discrimination and equal treatment
2. promoting equal opportunities for all – access to employment, education, in the workplace or in the healthcare sector
3. promoting the benefits of diversity for the European Union.

The activities undertaken during the Year will focus on the discrimination some individuals suffer owing to their race or ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability, all of which are grounds for discrimination that may addressed at European level. Attention will also be paid to multiple discrimination. Multiple discrimination refers to individuals suffering from unequal or unfair treatment for several reasons: for example, when a person is elderly and disabled or is a woman and member of an ethnic minority.

Lastly, the activities undertaken during the Year will take into account the various ways men and women experience discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.

In order to reach out to the public as much as possible, most of the Year's activities will be held nationally, regionally or locally in the Member States with respect to their individual needs. The activities could include:

  • A writing competition for schools on the theme of respect and tolerance;
  • a prize for companies deploying effective diversity policies;
  • training for local trade unionists on what impact anti-discrimination makes at their level;
  • a workshop attended by local bodies representing people that suffer from discrimination. A support agency for the disabled and an organisation representing migrants' would therefore be able to consider approaches for facilitating equal treatment in local services, such as housing or education.

The CNIDFF and its 115 local centres are planning in France to implement several events for the The European Year of Equal Opportunities for All in 2007.
